Introduction
The Andalusian Association for Subterranean Exploration (AAES), in collaboration with Hombre y Territorio, participated in the 24th International Congress on Territory and Culture, held at the University of Cádiz from September 12 to 15, 2023. The event brought together researchers, heritage professionals, and environmental advocates to explore the intersection of landscape, territory, and cultural heritage.
Featured Presentation: Roman Water Mines of Los Alcores
Researchers Enrique Peña and David León presented a talk titled:
“Environmental Studies in Roman Water Mines of Los Alcores (Seville): New Capabilities and Technologies”
The presentation focused on two groundbreaking lines of research:
Microplastics in Subterranean Environments
The team revealed early signs of calcified polystyrene micro-spheres, informally dubbed plastiolites, discovered in ancient Roman water galleries. These plastic residues, trapped in stable and humid underground conditions, appear to be undergoing geological integration—raising new questions about pollution and subterranean ecosystems.
Discovery of New Invertebrate Species
Explorations also led to the identification of previously undocumented cave-dwelling invertebrates, highlighting the ecological value of these historic hydraulic structures. The findings reinforce the need to protect these spaces not only as cultural heritage but also as sensitive biodiversity refuges.
A Collective Effort
The presentation was warmly received, with attendees praising its interdisciplinary approach and environmental relevance. Enrique Peña closed the session with a heartfelt remark: “This is a little piece of each of us” . Acknowledging the collaborative spirit of the project and the contributions of AAES colleagues.

Conclusion
AAES remains committed to applied research, subterranean heritage conservation, and scientific outreach. We thank the University of Cádiz for organizing the congress and Hombre y Territorio for their ongoing collaboration.
